MUM Jennifer White is dreading another summer during which her four-year-old daughter can’t play in the back garden.

The grassy area to the rear of their home in Paisley is out of bounds because of a problematic drain which overflows with smelly sewage.

Human waste pours out of a hole in the ground every time someone in the property flushes a toilet.

The mum-of-one is at the end of her tether and wants the problem sorted now before the hot weather worsens the stink.

Jennifer said she has lost count of the number of times she’s contacted Renfrewshire Council in the last two years in a bid to get the issue resolved, but is still no nearer a solution.

The back garden of her home in Marjory Drive, Gallowhill, is covered in raw sewage from the four houses in her block – and the smell is making her sick.

She told the Paisley Daily Express: “It’s the first thing you smell in the morning when you wake up and the last before going to bed.

“The moment someone flushes their toilet, out come the contents. It is totally disgusting.”

Jennifer’s daughter Rea, who is four and attends Gallowhill Nursery, has lots of outdoor toys, but can’t get out into the garden to enjoy them as the poo pile turns her stomach.

And Jennifer, 29, claimed her calls to the council have all but fallen on deaf ears, although she is now determined to see the problem through to a satisfactory conclusion.

She said: “Council workers have been out SEVEN times in the last couple of years but all they do is clean up the mess. They don’t get to the root of the problem. And so the stench remains.

“On one occasion, workmen dug up the offending drain but that just seems to have made the problem worse.

“Rea and I really are at the end of our tether and just want the problem sorted.”

With summer almost upon us, Jennifer is preparing to batten down the hatches in a bid to avoid the gut-wrenching stench of human waste.

She knows the mountain of poo is at its worst during the hot weather, and wants it fixed before the sun comes out in earnest.

Jennifer said: “Rea should be able to play out in the back garden when she wants but unfortunately, health wise, it simply isn’t safe.

“During the summer it is 10 times worse and really turns your stomach and despite it being there for so long it is something you never get used to. Your stomach simply doesn’t become acclimatised to the stench.

“I feel sick every time I get a whiff. It is the bane of my life. In fact, it’s almost that bad that it’s threatening to creep into the close now as well.

“You dread hearing someone in the block flushing their toilet because you picture the mound of sludge bubbling up, and getting bigger and bigger.

“It’s disgusting, filthy, smelly and horrible to look at. It’s a mixture of used toilet paper and brown mess beyond belief.

“I’m urging the council to sort it out, for the sake of my daughter and I.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “There are a number of faults with the underground drains and pipes that are causing this problem and we are trying to identify all of these before a full repair and clean-up is carried out.

“We have a contractor on site at the moment working on this, including carrying out a camera survey under the ground.

“We understand how unpleasant and inconvenient this is for the tenants and would ask for their patience as we try and resolve the problem.”
