Five bouncers quizzed in connection with alleged murder of tragic teenager
FIVE bouncers – one of them a woman – have been questioned in connection with the alleged murder of a tragic Paisley teenager.
Steven Smith, 18, died in the early hours of Boxing Day last year following an altercation with security staff as he tried to enter Fury Murrys nightclub in Shuttle Street, Paisley.
Cops immediately said they were treating the death as “suspicious” and appealed for information on where Steven had been before arriving at the club.
Detectives and medical experts have spent the last four months investigating exactly how the teenager died.
And, last week, the investigation led to the questioning of five bouncers from Fury Murrys under suspicion of murder.
The Crown Office would not confirm this, although they have acknowledged that a report has now been presented to the procurator fiscal.
It is understood that nobody has been charged in connection with the case.
A spokesman for the Crown Office said: “The Procurator Fiscal at Paisley has received a report into the circumstances of the death of Steven Smith on December 26, 2010.
“The Procurator Fiscal’s investigations into the circumstances of Steven’s death are continuing.”
Steven, who was from Gallowhill, Paisley, was known as “Smiddy” to his friends and his death, which happened at around 1am on Boxing Day, left his loved ones devastated.
Initially, police said it was unclear if Steven was pushed or simply fell to the ground and banged his head.
Detectives interviewed a number of witnesses and studied CCTV footage taken in the Shuttle Street area at around the time that Steven died.
Football jerseys and floral tributes were left on the steps of Fury Murrys and at a shrine near Gallowhill Community Centre following the tragedy.
Since then, thousands of people have also signed up to a Facebook page called “Shut Down Fury Murrys in Paisley.”
This is not the first tragedy to hit the Smith family in recent years.
Back in December 2006, Steven’s older brother Darren, who was 20 at the time, died after a stabbing incident at a house in Gallowhill.
At the High Court in Paisley, 26-year-old Christopher Horrell admitted a charge of culpable homicide in connection with Darren’s death.
